Bridge carving seems to be the thing that all of the technicians pay a lot of attention to. Technicians have a certain vanity about the quality of a piano’s bridges and they are always evaluating the skill of the ‘belly man’ (soundboard maker) who carved them.
The objective in carving good bridges is to set the bearing properly and evenly, and to make sure the strings are terminating laterally as well as horizontally at the same place. Often you will see poor quality bridges on a piano from the factory. Most people don’t notice, but we do.
