Jazz Central Combo Classes 2017: Rhythm Section Techniques

Throughout 2017, Jazz Central Studios, in partnership with The Dakota Foundation for Jazz Education (DFJE), will begin combo classes for students in combos with the desire to become better small ensemble players.

Open to high school & college students & young professional musicians. Must be in a currently rehearsing combo (see below for more info).

Cost: $60/attendee (need-based scholarships available)

Includes: Three 90-minute class sessions per group with professional jazz artist, and final recorded concert at JCS.

Goal: Take your combo to the next level! Explore improvisation and the collaborative nature of jazz music in a small group setting, by learning more about the music not found on the page. The classes will have a special emphasis on the rhythm section and their interactive role in the small group setting.

With the help from a family foundation and DFJE, Jazz Central Studios has employed the services of some notable local teaching professionals, including:
Chris Bates
Bob Bowman
Ted Godbout
Bryan Nichols
Javier Santiago
Mac Santiago
Adrian Suarez
and recently added...
Phil Hey
Chris Olson
and Mary Louise Knutson

These accomplished jazz artists will coach the combos and offer their take on the oral traditions involved in performing improvised music (i.e performing various time feels, hearing form, cueing, spontaneous arranging, hearing musical dialogue, etc).

We invite students with varied experience playing in small groups to apply. Combos must have a minimum three-piece rhythm section (drums, bass, piano and/or guitar). Students in grades 9-12 and college students will have first priority, but all are welcome to apply. Applications accepted throughout 2017, though space is limited. Groups will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.
