While the soundboard represents to some the heart of the piano, the hammers represent the voice.
There are many different kinds of hammers and many books written about hammer construction and voicing. To paint a picture in broad strokes, we divide the hammers into 2 different categories; tone built (lacquered) hammers which start out with a softer pressing, and the more densely pressed varieties that are voiced with a needle only.
